Smart Trifocal Intraocular Lens (IOLs)
Each person’s eye has its own natural lens. The lens has an elastic and transparent structure, which can lose flexibility and deform due to age, which leads to poor focus and, as a result, blurred vision. Replacing a natural lens with a distorted structure to an artificial smart Trifocal IOL, the visual defects are eliminated, providing clear vision at near, far and medium distances, significantly improving comfort and quality of life.
Trifocal IOLs is a three-focus artificial lens, which is implanted inside the patient’s eye during the cataract surgery.
Trifocal IOL implants provide great comfort for patients and eliminate vision problems for life. Trifocal IOLs are suitable for patients with vision problems and severe farsightedness due to cataracts or those who want to get rid of glasses for myopia at an early age. Trifocal IOLs, as their name implies, provide clear vision without glasses at three distances, that is, at near, middle and long distance.
This procedure may also be carried out on patients who have previously had laser treatment but as the number may not be perfect first time a second procedure may be needed.
What is presbyopia?
Usually, after the age of forty, the lens inside the eye can begin to lose its flexibility, thicken and harden, which affects the ability of the eyes to easily focus on closely located objects. Presbyopia continues to progress with age.
Many patients do not like to wear glasses because they age their appearance and are impractical to use. In order to get rid of lenses and glasses, you can do the operation of transplanting a Trifocal IOLs once and for a lifetime. Patients with trifocal implants can easily read and write, do household chores and even drive a car. Thus, the quality of life of the patient is improved.
Who is recommended for Trifocal IOL?
– Patients over 40 years old with vision problems close, intermediate or longer distance.
– Patients whose cornea is too thick to be corrected with a laser
– Patients with visual impairment due to previous laser operations that distorted the lens
– Patients with hyperopia or myopia
Smart Trifocal IOL implants are placed in the eye through a one-time operation once and for a lifetime.
– The eyes are prepare for surgery by washing with a disinfectant eye drops.
– With the help of ultrasound, a clouded natural lens multiplies and turns into an emulsion, and then is removed from the eye through micro-access in the cornea.
– In the capsule, where the natural lens was previously located, a flexible intraocular lens is introduced through an individual injector, which independently unfolds inside the eyes and is firmly fixed.
The micro-access is self-sealing; suturing after surgery is not required. The operation takes about 15 minutes however as both eyes are not done at the same time the second eye may be done the following day.. The patient does not feel any discomfort or pain, as the procedure made under local anesthesia. The same procedure applies to the other eye for several days.
Prior to making a decision on the operation, an analysis of the patient’s general state of health and the results of an examination of his visual system are mandatory.
Among the contraindications to the operation to replace the lens can be identified:
– Age-related macular degeneration
– Diabetic damage to the retina
– Strabismus
– Diseases associated with a violation of the cornea shape
– Decompensated glaucoma. The operation to replace the lens is possible only after normalization of intraocular pressure (excluding the type of glaucoma, when cataract is the cause of increased intraocular pressure)
On the first night after surgery, you need to sleep with a transparent plastic protector in front of your eyes. The next day, this protector is removed, and after eye control, you can return to everyday life. The first few days there is a temporary blurred vision due to the expansion of the pupil during surgery. Clear vision comes in a few days. Within a month, you need to use eye drops prescribed by your doctor. Although you will return to normal life a couple of days after the procedure from time to time for the first 3 months patients may sometimes experience some blurred vision and at nightime street lamps may give a halo-like glare.
