Breast reduction surgery also known as reduction mammoplasty is the process of removing some of the tissue and skin from the breasts to reshape the breast and reduce their size. During this proceedure the large areola (brown tissue around the nipple) can also be reduced as required.
The reduction of breast size can help provide relief from physical discomfort especially issues regarding posture, even though the main aim of augmentation more often relates to appearance.
Breast reduction can help relieve the physical issues associated with large or heavy breasts such as:
Many women are also unhappy with the shape and weight of their breasts, and for this reason find they are self-concious about their appearance
Breast Reduction Methods: Surgeons can use one of a few different methods depending on the patient’s desired outcome, anatomy and the tissue needing to be removed in order to achieve these results:
Periareolar: With this technique the patient,s scar will be around the areola (brown tissue around the nipple). This procedure is used for patients who do not have significant sagging and who are plan to reduce by a small amount. Usually, once the recovery is completed, the scars become pale and lose their clarity.
Reverse T: A horizontal scar in the sub-breast fold is added to the lollipop-style scar. It is a method used in very large breasts with excessive sagging.
This procedure is completed under general anesthetic and the duration is approximately 2-3 hours. Following Breast Lift Surgery patients can return to a non physical job after 1 week however a more physically demanding job will take up to 4 weeks. The patient will wear an anatomical bra for several months post surgery.
Following your procedure;
Recovery time is dependent on the method and type of breast surgery, simply because some are less invasive than others to the body. You will need someone to help you for 2-3 days, and you should not lift anything. After about a week, you can return to a job that is sedentary. You should not lift anything for at least 2-3 weeks even up to 6 weeks that weighs more than 10 pounds. If you must lift something during your recovery, then keep your elbows close to your body.
During your recovery, your surgeon will provide you with instructions to take care of yourself. Limiting your activity level in the first few weeks of your recovery will be one of them.
Smoking and drinking alcohol can seriously inhibit your recovery, so they should be avoided for at least three months post-surgery.
